Consumers make better choices when they use the Nutrient Rich Foods Index, according to the January Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Compared to controls, NRF participants who were part of a consumer education program increased meal planning and the use of shopping lists, were better able to identify nutrient-rich foods and consumed more vegetables and fruits. However, larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm the findings and better understand processes of change.
